Videogame News Scoop (heh, it rhymes with "poop")

There's nothing like putting on a freshly cleaned pair of glasses and discovering that reality isn't all blurry.

Well, sad news for British gamers.

GAME has bought Gamestation. Now, I've nothing against Game (I can't be arsed capitalising it every single time though, so I guess I have that against them) but the loss of Gamestation (I presume the plan is rebranding good locations and closing excess stores) is certainly tragic, if only because I doubt Game will carry on various policies of theirs.

Gamestation always had an excellent line in retro games. Indeed, if it weren't for that big window in the front of the shop, I wouldn't have my Virtual Boy or my Amstrad and if it weren't for that bargain bin I wouldn't have a fair chunk of my best retro games. Say what you like about high street prices compared to internet, eBay just doesn't compare to 3 handpicked games for £5 whenever you want.

Gamestation also supplied several of my favourite T-shirts and various other items of the miscellaneous tat that I love so much. Game is were I'd prefer to go for new releases but Gamestation always had the edge on second-hand stuff. Go in at the right time and you could pick up 5 Gamecube games for under £25. In fact, I did.

Perhaps they'll be a closing down sale, since I suspect that if any are to go, and they very likely will, the one I frequent in Ayr will be among them, being 30 seconds walk from the nearest Game. That could be worth going to if I can scrounge up some cash.

What would be great is if the GAME group just changed the focus of the different shops, making Gamestation focus on the hardcore and hobbyist markets, the proper gamers, and leaving the mainstream to Game stores. I really think that could work. Well, I'd like it to work, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Still, whatever happens, Gamestation in its current form is out. Maybe I'll like whatever it turns into, maybe I won't. But I really liked what it was before.

Just thought I'd put this up, since Skippy did a post about current affairs and since I don't keep track of those (though I may say something about tomorrow's Scottish parliament election), I figured it gave me justification to post some video game news.

In gaming news that's important to me and three other people, the VersusCOM podcast is officially on hiatus. We got some good feedback on our last episode but due to technical and temporal difficulties, we're so unlikely to get regular content up that we figured we could at least come out and say it.
